Wildcats Rough Up the Tigers Twice

The Normal West Wildcats scored in eight straight innings over two games, getting consistent strong offense to tame the Urbana Tigers 13-3 and 11-0 in a Big 12 Conference doubleheader at West Varsity Field.  The victories improve the Wildcats record to 14-4 overall and 2-0 in conference – only the first game of Saturday doubleheaders counts in the standings.

In the first game, the offensive highlights included two hits from Adam McGinnis and Trey Rogers each, and Wes Sery getting hit by a pitch three times.  Trey Rogers had three runs batted in and Adam Seifert, Alex Jefferson and Adam McGinnis had two each.

Kyle Vaughn collected his fourth win of the season on the mound.  Kyle went the distance, giving up three runs, two earned on three hits and two walks with a hit batter while striking out six hitters.

In the second game, Adam Seifert went to the hill and earned his third victory of the year.  He stymied the Tigers over five innings on three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Offensively, Alex Jefferson led the charge with two hits.  The Wildcats only needed seven to score their eleven runs as they were helped seven walks and hit batters.  Wes Sery needed a hot tub after the game after taking his fourth of the day.  Sery, Matthew James and Adam Seifert each drove in two runs.

The Wildcats return to action this week, hopefully, for a crack at going to Decatur Eisenhower after being rained out three times already.

Wildcats Tame the Panthers 7 – 4

The Normal West Wildcats opened conference play with a 7 – 4 victory over the Decatur Eisenhower Panthers at West Varsity Field.  Erik Sipes three-run homer in the 1st inning gave the Wildcats an early lead and it held up to move the Wildcats to 12-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Big 12 conference.

Dustin Detweiler started on the mound for the Wildcats and got the win, pitching five innings.  He gave up four runs, but only one earned on three hits, two walks and a hit batter, with six strikeouts.  Alex Jefferson came on in the 6th inning to pick up the save.  He gave up only one walk in his two innings and struck out the side in the 6th

After falling behind 2-0, the Wildcat got the lead right back in the top of the 1st.  Kyle Vaughn singled and stole second base before two wild pitches brought him home.  Adam McGinnis walked and stole second before a Wes Sery walk put two men on for Erik Sipes.  Sipes launched a shot over the center field fence to put the Wildcats up 4-2.  In the 3rd inning, the Wildcats pulled away from a 4-4 tie when Wes Sery led off with a double to left center and moved to third base on an infield out.  Trey Rogers beat out an infield grounder to score Sery and then scored on a Matthew James double over the center fielder.  James scored on two more wild pitches.

Wes Sery led the Wildcats with two hits while Erik Sipes had three runs batted in.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play the Panthers again tomorrow in Decatur, but the weather forecast is grim, so the next game may be against the Urbana Tigers at home on Saturday.

Wildcats Perfect in Win over Pioneers

Matthew James was essentially untouchable at West Varsity Field in a 10-0 five inning win over the U-High Pioneers.  James fanned 14 of 15 batters he faced, blowing fastballs by them and buckling knees with the breaking pitch.  The only exception was a 3rd inning routine grounder to third base.  The victory upped the Wildcats’ record to 11-4.

The offense got on the board in the 1st inning when Alex Jefferson led off with a walk, moved to third on a Kyle Vaughn base hit and scored on Adam McGinnis’ RBI double down the third base line.  After Wes Sery drove in Vaughn with an infield ground out, Adam Seifert laid down a bunt for a hit that scored McGinnis.  In the 2nd, Trey Rogers, returning from a broken thumb, got aboard on an infield error before Jefferson and Vaughn singled to load the bases.  McGinnis brought two in with a double and Sery drove in two more with a double to left center.  In the 3rd, Ryan Speller led off with a single before Jefferson blasted a two-run homer to left.  Vaughn not aboard on error, moved up twice on wild pitches and scored on Sery’s second double of the game.

Jefferson, Vaughn, McGinnis and Sery led the Wildcats with two hits each.  Sery had four runs driven in while McGinnis had three and Jefferson two.

The Wildcats are scheduled to return to action tomorrow against Decatur Eisenhower at Stephen Decatur middle school in Decatur.
