Wildcats Veto the Senators

The Normal West Wildcats showed they have good hitters up and down the lineup against the Springfield Senators in a 12-5 win at Chamberlain Park.  All nine Cats’ batters got a hit and five of them had multiple hits, including four each for Ryan Speller and Garrett Cook, as the Wildcats pile up 18 hits total against solid Senator pitching.  The victory raises the Wildcats record to 8-3 ahead of a return trip south on Friday to face the Chatham Glenwood Titans.

The Wildcats got out to a lead in the first inning Kyle Vaughn and Wes Sery walked and Matthew James singled Vaughn in.  In the 2nd, Speller got aboard on an infield error and stole second before Garrett Cook chased him with a double just inside the third base bag.  Alex Jefferson then drove him in with a base hit.

After the Senators tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd, the Wildcats got three in the 4th when Garrett Cook again double to left ahead of Jefferson getting hit and Vaughn walking to load the bases.  Wes Sery came through with a clutch two run single and Matthew James followed that up with an RBI single of his own.

In the 5th, Speller picked up his second single of the game and Cook got his third double in a row to put runners on second and third base.  Alex Jefferson cleaned them up with a single up the middle.  He went to third on an infield error on the Senators and scored on a wild pitch.  In the 6th, the Wildcats tacked on two when Adam Seifert singled and took second on an outfield bobble and scored on Speller’s third hit.  Speller moved to third on a Cook hit and scored on wild pitch.  The Wildcats closed out the scoring when Matthew James walked, Seifert singled and Erik Sipes drove in James with a single to left center.

Wildcats Blast the Pirates 16 – 6

The Normal West Wildcats jumped on the Ottawa Pirates early and cruised to a 16-6 victory at windy Wildcat Varsity Field today.  The Wildcats improved to 7-3.  Mac Byrd took the win in his first varsity start, holding the Pirates in check for 4 2/3 innings.  Byrd pitched with the lead throughout the game, getting clutch outs with runners on base in several of the early innings.  Byrd gave up six runs on the day, from ten hits, three walks, a hit batter and four strikeouts.  Nick Barnhill came on to record the last out with a strikeout in his first varsity appearance.

The Wildcats bats struck quickly in the 1st inning, putting a 7 spot on the board.  Alex Jefferson walked and got bunted to second base, balked to third and scored on an Adam McGinnis single.  McGinnis stole second, moved up on a wild pitch and after Wes Sery walked, scored on a Matthew James single to right.  Adam Seifert kept the train moving with a single that scored Sery.  An infield error plated James and then Jake McDowell got a base hit to load the bases.  Garrett Cook walked to bring in one and Alex Jefferson singled to drive in another run.

In the 2nd, Sery doubled and then Seifert doubled him in to make it 8-1.  In the 3rd, Jefferson singled and took second on a bad throw.  Kyle Vaughn doubled him home and then scored on an RBI single from McGinnis.  In the 4th, Adam Seifert led off with a double before McDowell walked and a fielder’s choice put McDowell and Cook at second and first.  Jefferson doubled both of them in and scored on a Vaughn single.

It looked like a run-rule game, but the Pirates got three in the top of the 5th to avoid that.  The Wildcats, though, got them back in the bottom half on a walk to Jacob Davis, an infield error when Dustin Detweiler batted and a triple by Erik Sipes that drove both of them in.  Unfortunately, Erik broke the third baseman’s nose on the play at third and the blood was a mess.  Sipes scored on a wild pitch when play resumed to close out the game.

Jefferson, Vaughn and Seifert had three hits for the Wildcats while McGinnis had two and Jefferson led the Wildcats with three runs batted in as McGinnis, Seifert and Sipes had two.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday with a trip to Lanphier Park in Springfield to face the Springfield Senators.

Wildcats Shoot Down the Redbirds

The Normal West Wildcats offense came alive against the Metamora Redbirds at West Varsity Field, pounding out 13 hits in an 11-5 victory.  The Wildcats upped their record to 6-3 with the win.

The offensive show started early as Alex Jefferson led off the bottom of the 1st with a single and Adam McGinnis launched a two run shot over the left field fence.  After the Redbirds briefly got the lead 3-2, the Wildcats jumped back on top in the 2nd on a Ryan Speller walk, sacrifice bunt to move him, single by Jefferson and double steal that put Jefferson on second base and scored Speller.  Jefferson then moved up on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.  In the 3rd, the Wildcats tacked on three more when Wes Sery singled, Adam Seifert singled, Speller walked and Sery and Seifert both scored on a squeeze bunt by Garrett Cook.  Jefferson then singled for the third time to drive in Speller.

In the 4th, the Wildcats broke the game open when James led off with a double high off the fence in left.  Jake McDowell singled to right to put runners at the corners and Seifert drove in James with a hit.  Ryan Speller got a bunt hit to load the bases before Garrett Cook drove two in with a base hit.  Jake McDowell manufactured the run in the 7th when he got aboard on a dropped strikeout and stole second base.  He moved up on a groundout and drew a balk to get home.
