Wildcats Double Up Green Wave

Mattoon 04242010 VarsityThe Normal West Wildcats pulled out two tightly contested games down at Mattoon on Saturday, winning the conference game 8-4 in eight innings and following up with a 10-3 victory in the second game.  The Wildcats move to 14-5 on the season and 4-0 in the Big 12 conference.  Brandon Brittin played a big role for the Wildcats, getting the victory on the mound with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and reaching base four times including scoring the go ahead run in the 8th inning.

Erik Sipes started on the hill and went 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on only two hits with a walk and eight strikeouts, including striking out the side in the 4th inning.  Brittin took over in the bottom of the sixth and allowed two hits and two walks with four strikeouts to get the win.

The Wildcats got two runs in the first when Kyle Vaughn singled to lead off the game and Brock Stewart walked in front of a Jason Cullen fielder’s choice put two on.  Jacob Birlingmaier doubled over the leftfielders head to score both runners.  In the 4th, Brittin and Emmerson singles preceded a Vaughn RBI single.  Emmerson moved the third and scored on wild pitches.  In the 8th, Brittin walked, stole second and moved up on a wild pitch to start the rally.  Tyler Emmerson walked to put runners on the corners.  A bunt by Kyle Vaughn was thrown away by the pitcher, allowing both runners to score.  After an intentional walk to Stewart, Jason Cullen’s fly to right scored Vaughn and Stewart scored on a Birlingmaier single.  Vaughn, Birlingmaier, Brittin and Emmerson had two hits to lead the Wildcats. Birlingmaier had three RBI.

In the second game, the Wildcats got on the board early as usual when Kyle Vaugn led off with a walk and Adam Seifert singled him to third base.  A wild pitch moved them both up.  Seifert stole third before Brock Stewart walked and scored when the catcher threw the ball into center on a Stewart steal.  In the 3rd, Brock hit a towering solo homer to right center.  In the 4th, Wes Sery singled and Brandon Zwaga brought him around with a double to left center.  In the 6th, Sery doubled and scored on a Zwaga single.  Taking a 5-3 lead into the 7th inning, the Wildcats broke game open with five runs.  Adam Seifert led off with a single.  After a walk to Cullen, Birlingmaier drilled an RBI single as did Sipes.  Sery drove in another with a double and Trey Rogers finished it with a 2-run single of his own.  Sery led the Wildcats with three hits, while Seifert, Stewart and Zwaga had two.  Zwaga and Rogers had two RBIs each.

Tyler Emmerson got the start and the victory for the Wildcats on the mound.  He worked five innings allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.  Adam Seifert got the save, entering in the 6th inning with runners at second and third in a 5-3 game.  He got six straight outs, including a very nice catch in left field by Erik Sipes.  He also whiffed two batters.

The Wildcats return to action on Thursday at home with a single game against the Rantoul Eagles.

Vaughn Pitches Wildcats Past Ironmen 5-1

Kyle Vaughn handcuffed Normal Ironmen batters for seven innings, leading the Normal West Wildcats to a 5-1 victory over their crosstown rivals.  Vaughn ups his record on the season to 5-0 and the Wildcats move to 12-5, 2-0 in the Big 12 conference.  Vaughn allowed only four hits and a pair of walks against four strikeouts, finishing strong by getting the last seven hitters he faced.  The Wildcat outfield was busy, hauling in ten fly balls on fairly routine plays.

Normal Community 04222010 Varsity  The Wildcat bats put together a big 2nd inning and that was enough.  Jacob Birlingmaier got things started with a ground ball that went for an error.  Erik Sipes then doubled down the left field line, scoring courtesy runner Brandon Zwaga.  A Wes Sery line drive single to right put runners on the corners.  An errant pickoff throw to first allowed Sipes to score and Sery to go all the way to third base.  Adam Seifert singled up the middle to score Sery and after Kyle Vaughn and Michael Collins walked to load the bases, Brock Stewart lifted a sacrifice fly to center.  Jason Cullen capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Sipes and Seifert led the Wildcats with two hits each, while Stewart, Cullen, Sipes and Seifert had RBIs.

The Wildcats resume league play on Saturday at Mattoon with a 10:00 AM doubleheader against the Green Wave.

Emmerson lead Wildcats past Ironmen 10-7

Tyler Emmerson sparked the Normal West Wildcats to a 10-7 victory over NCHS, going 3-3 and igniting the Wildcat offense.  Trailing 1-0 in the 5th inning, Emmerson drove a pinch hit single into right field.  Wes Sery bunted the sacrifice to the third basemen and Emmerson’s blazing speed allowed him to go all the way to third, and then score when the attempt on him was thrown away.  In the next inning tied at 3-3, Emmerson launched a two-run shot to left center breaking the deadlock.  He finished his day off with an RBI single in the 7th inning to provide the Wildcats some cushion.  The victory moves the Wildcats to 11-5 on the season and 2-0 in conference.

Jason Cullen started on the mound, going four innings and allowing only two runs, one earned.  Cullen only gave up two hits, while walking four and striking out three.  He also helped himself out by starting a nice 1-6-3 double play in the 3rd inning. Erik Sipes relieved Cullen in the 5th inning to get his second win of the season, allowing three earned runs on four hits, a walk, a pair of hit batters and a strikeout.

The Wildcat bats were quiet through four innings, but after Emmerson scored the Wildcats first run, Michael Collins singled and Brock Stewart broke the tie with a massive home run to right center field.  Kyle Vaughn singled in front of Emmerson’s homer in the 6th inning and the Wildcats broke the game open with singles by Wes Sery and Adam Seifert ahead of an RBI single from Collins.  He scored on a Jason Cullen double.  The Wildcats added some insurance in the 7th inning when Vaughn doubled with two outs, Emmerson singled him in, took second on the throw to the plate and scored on another Sery RBI single up the middle.

Emmerson, Collins and Vaughn led the Wildcats with three hits each, while Cullen and Sery had two.  Emmerson had three runs batted in, with Stewart and Cullen knocking in two.

The Wildcats and Ironmen meet again on Thursday at Wildcat Field at 4:30.
