NCWHS Freshman battle, drop pair to Morton

The NCWHS Wildcats fought hard, but came up short in a 9-6 loss to Morton in the first game of their double-header.

Mark Ogden started on the rubber for NCWHS, giving up just two earned runs over 3 2/3 innings and recording two strikeouts. Tyler Joaquin closed out the final 2 1/3 innings for the Wildcats, including a scoreless fifth.

Jeremy Fischer led the offense for the Wildcats, reaching base three times and scoring one run and driving in another on a double in the fourth inning.  McCade Brown also had an RBI for the Cats, driving in Jake Rutkowski on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.  NCWHS scored their remaining runs on a pair of singles in the seventh by Joaquin and Tyler Ott.

NCWHS dropped the second half of their double-header 10-0 to Morton at Westwood Park on Saturday.

Tyler Ott was the starting pitcher for the Wildcats, lasting 1 2/3 innings and recording four strikeouts.  Jake Rutkowski replaced Ott, allowing just one earned run and recording three strikeouts before handing the ball over to Ethan Stroyan for the final inning.

Ben Smith logged the only hit for NCWHS, a single in the second inning.

NCWHS Freshman rally late, defeat Pekin 3-2

The NCWHS Wildcats recorded their first victory of the year, rallying late to take down Pekin 3-2.

Ben Smith started on the mound for the Wildcats, giving up one earned run over four innings.  Zack Jones closed out the remaining three innings, giving up just one earned run, logging four strikeouts, and recording the win.

Smith also led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-4 and driving in the winning run on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to send the Wildcats home with the win.

The NCWHS Wildcats rallied in the sixth to put themselves in position for the win behind a a two-run single by Mark Ogden that scored Smith and Chase Hacker.

The NCWHS Wildcats out-hit Metamora 7-3, but couldn’t push enough runs across to get the win, losing 3-2 in seven innings to the Redbirds.

Jake Marti and Jeremy Fischer combined to log six strikeouts, holding Metamora to just one earned run.

One run in the bottom of the fourth helped the Wildcats close their deficit to 3-1. A single by Ben Smith gave the NCWHS Wildcats life, but Metamora stopped the rally with a ground out to end the inning.

The Wildcats closed the gap to one in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Chase Hacker, but were unable get any closer.
