Wildcats down the Bloomington Raiders 10-9
The Normal West Wildcat snuck by the Bloomington Raiders 10-9 in dramatic fashion at Howard Saar
Field Tuesday night. Erik Sipes struck out the Raiders #3 hitter with the tying run at third base and the go-ahead run on first to finish a heart pounder. In a game with several momentum swings, the Raiders rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, before Sipes closed the door. He had also killed a potential rally in the bottom of the 6th inning with a strikeout, leaving Raider runners at second and third. With the win, the Wildcats are now 17-5 and 7-2 in conference.
The Wildcats got on the board first in the top in the 1st inning when Zach Boicken got aboard on a Raider error, moved to second on an infield out and scored on a Wes Sery single to left. After falling behind 2-1, the Wildcats got the lead back in the top of the 3rd inning. Adam Seifert led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Boicken double to left center. Boicken moved to 3rd base on a bunt single by Kyle Vaughn. Vaughn stole second, but got cut down at the plate after a single by Jacob Null, which scored Boicken.
Brandon Zwaga got things started in the 4th inning with one of his three singles on the day. An errant pickoff throw moved him all the way to 3rd base, before a Trey Rogers double brought him home. After Seifert walked, Vaughn bought both of the runners home with a triple to deep right center. The Wildcats added to their 6-4 lead in the 5th inning with four additional runs. Erik Sipes led off by getting plunked in the ribs. He stole second and scored on a Jacob Null RBI single. Zwaga single again, putting runners at the corners before Kevin Henkels brought in Null with a sacrifice fly to right field. An Adam Seifert double over the leftfielder’s head brought home Zwaga and another Boicken single brought in Seifert. Vaughn, Null and Zwaga led the Wildcats with three hits, while Seifert, Boicken and Rogers had two each. Null, Vaughn and Boicken each had two RBIs.
Kyle Vaughn pitched the first 5 inning for the Wildcats to get the win. The Raiders touched him for seven runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts before he gave way to Erik Sipes. Sipes allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Wildcats and Raiders will do battle again on Thursday at 4:30, this time at Wildcat Sophomore Field.
